Anyone who's been to Smith Mountain Lake knows what a magical place it is, and the national press is spreading the word.
In a June 8 article posted to its website, Time magazine includes Smith Mountain Lake on a list titled "Six Great Wine Trips That Are Cheaper Than Napa Valley."
The article highlights areas that are producing good wine but don't "carry a steep premium because of … reputation." The lake is one of only two areas in the East Coast region that made the list. Others are in Texas or on the West Coast.
About Smith Mountain Lake, the author says:
"If you'd like to enjoy an especially scenic view as you explore, it's hard to top Smith Mountain Lake. The region is well suited for Viognier, Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin. There are 16 wineries in the general Roanoke area (including Smith Mountain Lake), so you won't feel rushed – and you'll be able to spend some time unwinding on the lake as well."
Sixteen wineries! No wonder the region is getting attention. So, be sure add a wine tour to your summer plans. When it comes to choosing your stops, check out this wineries map that features locations across the state.
